Anita Roddick — The decisions behind The Body Shop
In March 1976 Anita Roddick opened a small shop selling personal care products in Brighton, financed with a £4,000 loan. Bottles were scarce, so customers brought them back to be refilled. Almost fifty years later The Body Shop is world-famous, but it is also a brand that went into administration in the United Kingdom in 2024 and whose Dutch arm went bankrupt.
In this founder story you discover how constraints grew into brand values, why franchising and a stock market listing accelerated growth and how activism became the core of the brand. You also read about the other side: a libel case over animal testing, critical articles about claims, falling profits, the sale to L’Oréal and three changes of owner in seven years, up to the relaunch of part of the shops in the Netherlands and Austria.
From story to practice
Six Decision Labs translate the decisions to your own business. You work out the break-even point for your first shop, compare the margin on a refill with that on new packaging, look at franchising from both sides, calculate dilution when new capital comes in, build a claims register and discover why an acquisition price is something other than working capital. All worked examples are fictional and verifiable.
